“”How many times have you been to a product website and seen big bold letters proclaiming that you can CONNECT and ENGAGE and DISCOVER? Every time I see that, I hit the back button, and I bet you do too.
It’s because it’s vague. It’s supposed to sound exciting, but it’s not. It doesn’t say anything about what you can really do with the app.
Nobody wants to connect or discover.
Brent Simmons on Twitter’s new nomenclature. Spot-on. (via mrgan)
Spot-on, indeed. The problem with those words is something I’ve been thinking about since I heard Merlin talking about “excellence” and other nouns on Back to Work (which you should be listening to if you aren’t).
Words like CONNECT and DISCOVER are too far up the ladder of abstraction to be quickly understood. What do we mean by connecting or discovering? Good writing, good design and good thinking all require concrete, vivid language, which the words used to describe Twitter’s new sections (or used in most mission statements, to bring it back to B2W), are most certainly not.
