Wetteland, who has not had a valid license in six years, was driving with a bottle of brandy between his legs shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 1 when he was stopped by police on Macy Street in Amesbury after nearly hitting a car, according to public records.
He refused to take a breath test or any field-sobriety tests but smelled of alcohol, had trouble standing and slurred his words as he told police,
“I’m drunk. You know it. I know it. I’m not going to deny it,” Assistant District Attorney Thomas Sholds said.
“He went on to state…that he’s been driving drunk for a long time, …that this is what he does and that he doesn’t give a (expletive) about the law,” Sgt. Kevin F. Donovan wrote in his report.
“I’ve been doing this all along,” Wetteland allegedly told police. “This is what I do.”
In addition to the brandy, officers found an open, 12-ounce can of Bud Light and eight full cans of beer, still cold, in his Ford Explorer, Sholds said.
