    Allen Ginsberg - “America”

    Reading from 3/18/1956

    text

I used to ride my bike all around Lawrence, KS when I was going to KU and I liked listening to a recording of this read to music by Tom Waits.  Somehow, for the last few years, I’ve failed to think about it.  So glad it’s been brought back to my attention.

I have the recording you mention, and it’s wonderful. Actually, this poem is generally wonderful. It and “A Supermarket in California” are my favorites of his.

(Edited to add: Please don’t read the comments on that poem if you were an English major. Side effects of ignoring this warning may include eye-rolling injuries, headaches and a decrease in your faith in the intelligence of humanity)
