Lots of talk today about how Chile might fare better in earthquake recovery.

When I was a college sophomore, I took and Environmental Studies class, and the professor said that we should think of earthquakes as a class event. That is to say: poor people and poor countries are affected much more than wealthy ones. Earthquakes don’t discriminate about who gets hurt, but a country with a barely functioning infrastructure is much more likely to be devastated than a rich one.
